Atlanta’s long wait for The Halal Guys is almost over: The New York street cart-turned-restaurant chain will open its first Georgia location on Saturday, January 28. It’s turning up at 4929 Buford Hwy. in Chamblee.

“After a longer than expected construction process, I’m excited to finally open our red and yellow doors to the public," franchisee Moynul Chowdhury said Friday. “It’s been amazing to see and hear the excitement from so many people — both in person and on our social media channels — as soon as our signs and signature colors went up on the corner of Clairmont Road and Buford Highway. We couldn’t have picked a more eclectic part of town to open our first location — it fits us perfectly.”

The Halal Guys first announced plans for local expansion in June 2015, and the burgeoning chain revealed its Buford Highway address a year later. Four more local outposts are in the works. Chowdhury previously told Eater Atlanta locations were being scouted in Midtown, near the Atlanta Braves’ new Cobb County stadium, and near Emory University.

The Buford Highway restaurant will operate Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. On opening day, the first 50 diners will receive a free entree platter and fountain drink, and the next 200 will receive a Halal Guys t-shirt. Grand-opening festivities will include live entertainment and a raffle with various prizes from The Halal Guys and its sponsors.

The Halal Guys, which started in 1990 as a street cart in Manhattan, is known for its gyro sandwiches and beef and chicken platters with rice. The franchise is being taken to the national level by Fransmart, a company that also transformed Five Guys Burgers & Fries and Qdoba into national brands.
