The feline-friendly coffee shop is planned for Irwin Street

Happy Tabby Cat Cafe, first announced last March, is making progress toward its opening. There’s still no firm timeline, but owner April Hill is currently renovating an Old Fourth Ward space at 529 Irwin St. NE.

“Happy Tabby is working everyday to open as soon as possible and working with the city to restore our beautiful, old building,” Hill said in an email to Eater Atlanta. “It was built in the year 1900, so it has taken a lot of love to get it up to code. It is in the historical King District, which we are so excited about. We are exposing the original brick walls and concrete floors, as well as installing state of the art light fixtures and appliances.”

The building is in a prime location, less than a half-mile from the Martin Luther King Center in one direction and the BeltLine’s Eastside Trail in the other. Hill says she and her team have taken over both the 529 and 531 spaces and knocked down the wall that separated them.

When she revealed plans to open a cat cafe, Hill said Happy Tabby would serve pre-packaged foods and “standard coffee beverages.” The business will partner with no-kill animal shelter Furkids and will regularly foster 15 to 20 adoptable felines.

Happy Tabby is one of two cat cafes coming soon to Atlanta’s East Side. Java Cats Cafe is closing in on its debut at 415 Memorial Dr. SE, Suite C, in Grant Park.
