The creator of popular pop-up Upper Room is getting a new job, along with a new venue to showcase his skills.

Andrew Bantug will serve as executive sous chef at Taiyo Ramen in downtown Decatur, and will also move his Filipino pop-up, which he runs with his girlfriend, Joyce Lau, to the restaurant.

Bantug and Lau started Upper Room — which serves a Kamayan-style dinner on Sundays — in November 2016.

Previously known as Makan, Taiyo is one of several projects from Korean Wives Hospitality Group, which is owned and operated by Michael Lo and executive chef George Yu. The pair also run Suzy Siu’s Baos in Krog Street Market and have plans for to open Chinese restaurant Double Dragon in Oakhurst, Noona, a Korean steakhouse at Parsons Alley in Duluth and Ramen Station at the Larkin on Memoral development later this year.

“Andrew brings a lot of great experience with Asian cuisine as well as being classically trained,” Yu said of Bantug. “He’ll help add to our craft ramen program as well as enhance our Japanese appetizers and related offerings.”
